Welcome to the UCSF Emeriti Faculty Association Online Community

I hope everyone has had a wonderful, relaxing, and educational summer. We are looking forward to Dr. Gestwicki’s lecture in September at our first meeting of the new fiscal year. I had the pleasure of attending his presentation at the Discovery series at this year’s alumni weekend. He presented a fascinating “TED” type talk about curing cataracts with drugs instead of surgery, which he will elaborate at our meeting. His work is also applicable to possibly treating other neurodegenerative disorders, e.g. Alzheimer’s.
We also look forward to all of our speakers for the coming year:

Schedule of Speakers:
• September 16th - Jason Gestwicki, PhD; Associate Professor in Residence.
• February 10th - Deepak Srivastava , MD; Professor Pediatrics.
• May 19th - John Gordon Frierson, BA, MD; Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Emeritus

It is also a pleasure to serve as your new president of the UCSF Emeriti Faculty Association (UCSFEFA). I have to step into some big shoes of our past president. Michael Thaler was an exceptional role model to follow. He has passed on to me an association that is well accepted by UCSF and in a solid financial state. I want to thank him for all the hard work he has done over the past 4 years. I would also like to thank our hard working members of the Executive Committee: Michael Thaler, past president; Henry Peter Ralston, Secretary; Calvin Zippin, Treasurer; Ernest Newbrun, Representative to the Council of the University of California Emeriti Faculty Associations (CUCEA); Michael Winter, Representative to the Faculty Welfare Committee; & Joseph Kitterman, Member at Large. I would also like to thank our Administrator, Louis Gutierrez who so ably supports all of our activities. Louis is also the person to get in contact with if you are interested in becoming a member of the Executive Committee, or have questions about membership in the UCSFEFA.

Each year UCSF awards a number of emeriti faculty a two-year award to enhance their ability to do continued research. “The Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professorship Award was created by a gift endowment from the late Edward A. Dickson, Regent of the University of California from 1913 to 1946. The Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Professorship Award honors outstanding research, scholarly work, teaching, or/and public or educational service performed at UCSF by an emeritus or emerita professor since retirement.”

The Office of the Vice Provost-Academic Affairs issues a call for the award each winter quarter (see the past call). Award timeline and details may vary each year. For more information, please contact the Office of the Vice Provost-Academic Affairs by emailing Abigail.Draper@ucsf.edu.

2016 - 2018 Award Recipients:

Virginia Carrieri-Kohlman, RN, MS, PhD
Professor of Physiological Nursing, Emerita
Proposal: The Measurement of Dyspnea: Translation To Clinical Practice
James Cleaver, PhD
Professor of Dermatology and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Emeritus
Proposal: Chemotherapy and DNA Repair
John Gordon Frierson, BA, MD
Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Emeritus
Proposal: Research on the History of the Angel Island Quarantine Station

We are also interested in getting the word out about the EFA to current UCSF faculty. We thought one way of doing that was to invite them to the meeting when the speaker is from their school. So this Emeritidings is also being emailed to the faculty of the SOP.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our September meeting,

Robert H. Levin, Pharm.D., FASHP, FCSHP
President, Emeriti Faculty Association
Professor Emeritus of Clinical Pharmacy
